Big changes can leave us feeling unsettled and destabilized. One of the few things guaranteed in this life is change. When faced with obstacles, we often times we run, avoid, ignore, over commit, numb, and the list goes on and on. Being your own best friend even as the world turns in all kinds of direction can sometimes be the only thing we can do to keep ourselves steady during scary times.
We often look to other people to fill those needs; a friend, a partner, a parent, a community etc. And while community can be incredibly valuable to us, we also need to make sure we are being there for ourselves too. Do you treat yourself with compassion when things are tough? Do you speak to yourself in a supportive way? Are you a friend to yourself?
I recommend not just being a friend but being your own best friend.
How can I be my best friend you may ask? There are endless ways; being gentle with yourself can be incredibly supportive in times of distress. It can look like taking it a little slower in the morning, remembering to eat and hydrate, taking some breaths, asking for help when you do need help, and even just reminding yourself that right now you are there for yourself.
At the end of the day, you will always be with yourself- come rain or shine. Why not get along with the person in the mirror? After all, during all those changes we experience in our lives we will always be with ourselves. We can commit to never leave or abandon ourselves no matter who stays or goes, no matter what we lose or gain, and no matter the changes big or small.
If you're navigating a major life transition and could use support, I'd love to help. I work with adults across California, New York, New Jersey, and Florida — reach out for a free consultation.

The 13th century Persian poet and mystic Rumi once said "“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” One thing we can be certain of is that life is full changes. How we deal with those changes has a significant impact on our well-being.
